Anim8or is a free 3D modeling and animation software that has been around since 1999. No longer considered to be particularly powerful among 3D graphics software, Anim8or is often overshadowed by professional programs like Blender and Maya, though it still retains a cult following, and for good reason. Anim8or is often used to recreate the nostalgic, smooth style of CGI that was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It also sees use in projects that utilize a more cartoonish style, as complex models with realistic shading are not always necessary. While I am still learning the ropes of Anim8or, I’ve enjoyed the experience quite a bit. I mainly create art with a regular laptop, which isn’t built to handle huge pieces of software. Running Blender is possible (and I’ve enjoyed working with it in the past), but since I’m starting out and don’t aim to create super professional-looking models just yet, Anim8or is a great alternative for me and other beginners using lower-end computers. In fact, every single version of Anim8or has been smaller than 3 megabytes, meaning it doesn’t take up much room and can run very efficiently on most computers. Art made with it also has a unique charm, allowing the program to create a niche for itself. It has a small, but dedicated following of fans and an independent developer who encourages the creativity of the Anim8or community.
