How to Create a Gradient in Classic Microsoft Paint
This article will cover the steps of creating a gradient in classic versions of Microsoft Paint. While it’s usually thought that one can only create solid, flat colors with Paint, in reality, creating gradients is quite simple. The process is just a bit different from accomplishing something similar in different programs.
Step 1: Open a new project
You’ll need a blank canvas to create your gradient. You can choose any size you’d like, though I wouldn’t recommend working off of a very small canvas, as we need room for the colors to blend.
Step 2: Choosing colors
Use the line tool and paint bucket to create solid, diagonal stripes of your desired colors. You must have at least two colors to create a gradient, but there’s no limit on how many you use. I’m creating a simple rainbow to demonstrate this technique.
Step 3: Blending the colors
Now, press the “resize” button and select “pixels”. Uncheck the “Maintain aspect ratio” box, and take note of what the horizontal width is. Change this number to 1. Click OK. Your canvas should now be incredibly thin.
Now, click resize again, and increase the size. You don’t have to use the original width, but I’m choosing to do so. Click OK.
Your gradient will now appear
Your colors have blended together smoothly! The finished gradient can be used as a background for artwork or for filling in smaller areas using the selection tool. Using this method, you can add a bit more depth to your artwork in Microsoft Paint!
